If you’re looking for unique things to do near Dallas, Texas, a visit to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose needs to be on your radar. Located just a scenic two-hour drive from the city, this 1,800-acre sanctuary promises an African safari experience right in the heart of Texas.

But is a drive-thru safari actually fun, or is it just a glorified petting zoo? We packed up the car and hit the road to find out.

The Verdict: It is an incredible, immersive experience, but the vehicle you bring and the time of day you arrive completely dictate your trip. Here is our firsthand review, the mistakes we made, and exactly how to plan your visit to Fossil Rim.

The Drive-Thru Experience: Choose Your Vehicle Wisely

While Fossil Rim offers guided tours, we highly recommend the self-guided drive-through tour. It is a two-hour, self-paced adventure where exotic creatures literally walk right up to your windows.

Road Trip & Travel Tip: Your vehicle choice matters! Having a car with a sunroof, a hatchback, or an open truck bed is like having a built-in wildlife viewing platform. It allows you to enjoy a 360-degree panorama without having to look through dirty glass.

Having a sunroof in your car is like having a built-in wildlife viewing platform, allowing you to enjoy a 360-degree panorama of the animals at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center.

Upon arrival, you are given an animal identification guide and one bag of animal feed per car.

  • Warning: Ration this precious resource! It is very easy to excitedly feed the first few herds you see and completely run out of food before you even hit the halfway mark.

The Big Mistake: Why You Have to Beat the Texas Heat

Texas summers are notoriously scorching, and the animals know it. We made the mistake of visiting later in the day, and we paid the price when it came to the park’s most famous residents: the giraffes.

By midday, most of the animals seek refuge in the deep shade of the trees. Unfortunately, as we approached the giraffe area, these gentle giants had retreated far from the road to find solace from the relentless heat. We still saw them, but it was a distant encounter rather than the up-close experience we had hoped for.

The Lesson: If you want a close encounter with the giraffes, arrive as early in the morning as the park allows!

Unfortunately, as we approached the giraffe area, these gentle giants had retreated far from the road, seeking solace from the relentless Texas summer heat under the shelter of distant trees. This made for a memorable, if somewhat distant, encounter with these magnificent creatures.

The Overlook: The Only Place to Stretch Your Legs

Halfway through the 7.2-mile journey, you will reach the Overlook. This is the only spot where you are legally allowed to exit your vehicle. Here, you’ll find restrooms, a cafe, a well-stocked Nature Store, and a stunning viewing balcony that looks out over the landscape. Most importantly, this is where the Children’s Animal Center is located.

Inside the hands-on Children’s Animal Center, you can get up close with goats, sheep, tortoises, pot-bellied pigs, and some incredibly curious emus. It is incredibly clean, well-kept, and a great place to reset before finishing the drive.

Beyond the Drive: Meet the Exotic Herds

As you continue your drive, keep your animal guide handy. You will encounter herds of Fallow Deer, massive Waterbucks resting by the watering holes, and Axis deer showing off their striking spotted coats.

You will also encounter Zebras. They are captivating, but remember our warning from our visit to The Amish farm in Walnut Grove, do not hand-feed the zebras, because they bite! Toss the food on the ground for them instead.

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, nestled in the heart of Glen Rose, Texas, boasts a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1984. Initially conceived as a private wildlife refuge, Fossil Rim has since evolved into a globally recognized center for conservation and education.

If you are a serious wildlife enthusiast, Fossil Rim also offers exclusive guided tours that grant access to sensitive animals you cannot see from the public road, including Maned wolves, Black-footed cats, and endangered rhinos.

The “Real Talk” Survival Guide: 5 Tips for Fossil Rim

  • 🚙 Rent or bring the right vehicle: A sunroof or open-bed truck elevates the experience from a “drive” to a true “safari.”
  • 🧴 Prepare for the Overlook: You will be in the AC of your car most of the time, but bring sunblock and bug spray for the hour you spend walking around the Overlook.
  • 🔭 Pack Binoculars: Many animals (like the rhinos and giraffes during the heat of the day) hang out far from the road. Binoculars are a lifesaver.
  • 🎟️ Book in Advance: If you want a private guided tour, you must purchase tickets online at least three days in advance.
  • 🛏️ Stay the Night: We didn’t do this, but Fossil Rim actually offers overnight lodging! We are absolutely looking into this for our next visit.
