Mountain Thunder Coffee Tour: The $199 Hack for Premium Kona Coffee

If you love coffee, visiting a Kona coffee farm on the Big Island of Hawaii is a mandatory pilgrimage. But when you are traveling with a 9, 12, and 15-year-old, dragging them to an agricultural farm for three hours sounds like a recipe for endless complaining.
Our Expectation: We assumed we would drink a few samples, nod politely at some plants, and the kids would be bored out of their minds.
The Reality: Through a series of happy accidents, we ended up taking every single tour Mountain Thunder offered—and our kids still talk about it as one of the absolute highlights of our entire Hawaiian vacation.
From harvesting coffee berries to roasting our own beans, here is our honest review of the Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation, and the exact $199 tour package that essentially pays for itself.
The VIP Tour: Lava Tubes & High-Altitude Farming
Because Mountain Thunder consistently wins awards for having the best 100% Kona coffee, they offer a few different ways to see the property. We took the 3-hour VIP Organic Kona Coffee Farm Tour.
Usually hosted by the owner’s son, we actually had the privilege of having Trent, the owner himself, guide our semi-private tour. This wasn’t just a walk through a greenhouse. We hiked right past ancient lava tubes into the coffee orchard. Trent shared incredible stories about accidentally discovering new lava tubes on the property and the unique challenges of growing coffee beans at such a high elevation on a volcanic slope.

The Roast Master Experience: The Best ROI in Hawaii
If there is one thing you take away from this review, let it be this: Book the Roast Master Experience. Most tours just hand you a cup of coffee at the end. Mountain Thunder actually hands you a bucket of green Kona beans and puts you to work. Under Trent’s guidance, we took our newly gained knowledge and fired up the roaster.
Trent taught us the real secrets of a roast master. We learned exactly what to watch for, why light roast coffee actually retains better flavor than dark roast, and how to listen closely for the “crack” when the bean finally releases its oils.
When the warm, freshly roasted beans were done, we walked over to the bagging room and bagged up our own coffee to take home.

The Verdict: Which Tour Should You Take?
Mountain Thunder offers options for every budget, but the math on the premium tour is almost too good to pass up.
If you have the time (and want the ultimate hack): Book the group Roastry Deluxe Tour. At the time of our visit, it was $199 for the group. Not only do you get an overview of the entire process and the hands-on roasting experience, but you actually get to divide up and take home the 5 lbs of premium 100% Kona coffee you just roasted. Since 100% Kona coffee usually retails for $40 to $50 a pound, you are taking home $200 to $250 worth of world-class coffee. The tour practically pays for itself!

If you are short on time (or money): Just drop in for the Free Tour! It takes about 20 minutes to complete and walks you through the dry milling, sizing, and packaging process. You still get free coffee tasting on the lanai, and you can simply buy a bag from the gift shop.
The adults all enjoyed this tour, but we were surprised how much our kids (ages 9, 12, 15) enjoyed it too. They still say this was one of the highlights of our entire Hawaiian vacation.
