Hot Water Beach in Coromandel, New Zealand is a unique destination that attracts visitors from all over the world. Located on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, this stunning beach is renowned for its hot springs, which bubble up through the sand.
The sign confirmed we arrived at the right beach.
Hot Water Beach can be visited all year round, but the best time to visit is during low tide. This is when the hot springs are exposed, and you can dig your own personal hot pool.
Plan to be there 2 hours before or after low tide for the optimal experience. Check for the local tide times.
Parking is available in three locations: main beach carpark, Te Waiwai carpark, and the Main Store carpark (fees may apply).
Be aware that the beach can get crowded during peak season, so arriving early is recommended.
You can rent a spade from the local shops if you don’t have one. Luckily for us, the place we stayed supplied us with our shovel (or “spade”) when we told them our plans for Hot Water Beach.
Finding the correct location should be easy. Once tracking the beach about 1/8 of a mile, you will see a gathering of people digging in the sand near the rocks at the southern end. Everyone was friendly and excited to share this adventure.
A hot underground river flows from within the earth, emerging into the Pacific Ocean. During low tide, the underground river is close to the sandy surface. Everyone took turns digging this pit before a larger wave would come and wash away the progress.
The created hot pools are washed away during the ebb and flows of tides, making a solidly smooth platform for new visitors to encounter.
We loved “discovering” and exploring Hot Water Beach. The only thing we regret is not being prepared with swimming gear to submerge ourselves into our dug spa. I would highly adding this stop to your itinerary while visiting Coromandel add it to the “must do” list of Kiwi experiences.
